What are teachers asking about Formative?

What is the CAASPP?

The California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) is California’s statewide testing program administered by the California Department of Education.

CAASPP measures how well students are mastering the knowledge and skills outlined in California’s academic standards and provides information to educators, districts, and families about whether students are on track for college and career readiness.

According to the California Department of Education, the CAASPP system includes several statewide assessments:

  • Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments in English language arts/literacy (ELA) and mathematics
  • California Science Test (CAST)
  • California Alternate Assessments (CAA) for students with the most significant cognitive disabilities

These assessments measure student progress toward California’s academic standards.

What grades and subjects are assessed under CAASPP?

Grades 3–8 and 11:

  • English Language Arts/Literacy (ELA)
  • Mathematics

Grades 5, 8, and once in high school:

  • Science (California Science Test)

Alternate versions of these assessments are available for eligible students.

How is CAASPP administered?

CAASPP assessments are primarily administered online using a computer-based testing system.

Schools administer the tests during a statewide testing window each spring, following guidelines from the California Department of Education.
